Thomas Halton sought out Cutting Edge Cabinetry to redesign his kitchen and laundry. The existing kitchen, a small space positioned near an adjacent entryway, needed to remain functional without obstructing traffic between the entrance and dining room. While compact, the client wanted the kitchen to feel more open, with a clean, modern design that maximised every inch of available space. Thomas also wished for the laundry to match the kitchen’s aesthetics and quality.

Design & Materials

To achieve the client’s vision, we carefully mapped out the kitchen layout, focusing on maintaining clear access to the entryway and dining area. We marked the kitchen island on the floor to ensure proper clearances, making sure the design wouldn’t impede movement through the space. A curved bench top was incorporated to expand the worktop area without encroaching on the surrounding space. The cabinetry was finished in planked urban oak and soft matte black, giving the kitchen a modern yet warm feel.

The kitchen featured stone worktops, and smooth, durable hardware. An LED ribbon with a wave sensor was also installed under the range hood cabinetry.

One notable custom feature was the extension of the overhead cupboards into the window space, creating a seamless transition across the wall for a polished, uniform appearance. Additionally, venting was neatly incorporated into the fridge side panel to accommodate the heat pump without compromising the overall look.

In the laundry, we utilised a stone off-cut from the kitchen bench top to maintain a cohesive design.

Challenge

The main challenge was designing a compact kitchen that would include all essential elements while maintaining an open and spacious feel. Careful planning and strategic use of space, including the curved bench top, were crucial in achieving this balance. We also faced the challenge of ensuring clean lines and consistency, especially with custom cabinetry returning into the window space. The design had to be precise to create a seamless, cohesive look that fit within the tight spatial constraints.

Outcome

The result was a beautifully functional kitchen and laundry that maximised the available space while maintaining a sense of openness and ease of use. The client’s request for a modern, spacious kitchen was met with thoughtful design choices, such as the curved bench top and custom cabinetry. Both spaces were finished to a high standard, showcasing Cutting Edge Cabinetry’s attention to detail and commitment to delivering exceptional results. The project was completed within the scheduled five-week time frame, and Thomas was delighted with the transformation.
